It’s far too easy to make a mistake when filling out a form. When an error happens, people need to understand what went wrong.

The first step in fixing an error is to ensure the person is informed about the mistake. Start by moving the focus to the error message when it appears. If the error message is not already next to the form field that this error addresses, then you should also provide a way for people to move to the error. Moving the focus to the error means people don’t need to look for the error to fix it.
